Not sure I can agree Mako– zoom lens and tripod? slow film and a zoom? I think a small TLR will give better 'quality'. I would rather spend the money on another lens for his Canon Rebel film camera and a decent tripod and have him work on getting the maximum quality out of that system. I used Blads for years in the studio, I think they handle well, my only worry would be the 'KLOP' shutter/mirror sound if using in public.

I was always surprised at how light it was. I also use to own a Hasselblad 500C with three lenses. The Mamiya 7 is a great camera, should be Ok for handheld to about 1/30, weight can be an advantage, I also shoot with a Fuji RF which is lighter but has a fixed lens. and he feels that it belongs on a tripod. Right now my son is borrowing a Mamiya 7 from the school.
